Winners Crowned at Red Cup Classic; JK Special Wins Atlantic Aged Mares Series

Summerside, PE – Bet The House remains perfect at Red Shores Summerside winning the afternoon feature in 1:59 as the LOTTO 649 Red Cup Classic weekend moved to Prince County Oval. The day was filled with promotions and trackside presentations for all the winners.

Jason Hughes hustled the Blaine McKenna trainee off the gate to the lead and tapped the breaks on route to a 30.1 opening panel and half at a mild 1:01 before stepping out the next panel at 1:30.2. The son of Betters Delight captured his third win in a row at Summerside. Bakardi Arti was second while Roccos Cavallo finished third. McKenna co-owns the pacer with Gary Arsenault of Miscouche.

Gary Chappell, Walter Cheverie and Brodie MacPhee had driving doubles on the afternoon.

The card was marred by an accident in race 6 when Unstoppable Speed, with Corey MacPherson, got tangled up with Paphos and driver Norris Rogers. Unstoppable Speed put this foot through the wheel disc of Paphos sending driver Norris Rogers to the track. The Summerside native walked away from the spill and remained in action. Horses and drivers were not injured.

 Saturday at Red Shores Charlottetown

Charlottetown, PE – JK Special, under the control of Walter Cheverie, charged to the front of the pack and held off all challengers to claim a leg of the Atlantic Aged Mares Pacing Series at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park. The series is presented by Standardbred Canada, Red Shores and the PEI Harness Racing Industry Association.

JK Special, owned and trained by Joe Smallwood of Stratford, toured the legendary oval in 2:01.2 over a track rated as sloppy. Darling Jane was second while General Luckypercy was third.

In other action, Outlawpositivcharg wired the preferred pacers for driver-trainer Terry Gallant and owner Fred Lamont, Calgary, Alberta. The 2:01.3 score was his 45th lifetime victory.  Oakrock Almighty and Arabica were part of the top three.

Racing returns Thursday at 7pm and Saturday at 6pm at Charlottetown. Red Shores Summerside presents a card on Sunday. Post time is 6pm.
